The gauges not only provide important data about the engine of a car or truck, but they can also add some style to the vehicle. When deciding which gauges to add to your vehicle, there are many different routes and angles to consider.

Over the years, I have developed a skill that can eliminate good garage sales from bad ones. First and foremost, if it were in a development project built in the past 20 years, I would continue to drive, and there would be nothing to me.

What brought me in was an old house with an old garage. Most of the time, there are tables in the main part of the garage, which are filled with almost necessary coffee cups, piles of VHS tapes and at least one electric carving knife that has never been used, but it is a shelf on the wall. There are random items in a mess, which is of great value to the car crowd.

This is where I concentrated on searching for treasures. Among them, I often find old car meters, and I have been grabbing them as much as possible for several years. Sometimes they are separate meters, sometimes double or triple groups; you never know what you will find, but in this round of collecting other people's trash, foresight has been rewarded.

Instrumentation has always been an interesting topic, and they are the key to a car's function and personality. This month we will look at some of the most common and common features, starting from old school to emerging trends.

call! It looks good to me. Sometimes it's part of the repair, sometimes it's an upgrade in the eyes of the car owner. More and more classic car owners want this type of instrumentation and in many cases need help to determine whether they are effective. Examples of "old school" include old Sun Blue Line meters or old Stewart Warner. We are talking about real retro, in this case, not just the appearance or a series of new instruments, but the real old ones.

In most cases, the owner sees an old photo of a muscle car or racing car and tries to make everything correct. They are usually looking for the exact brand, size, or specific color. In some cases, they may already have the meters they want, but they need professionals to install them.

Mechanical instrumentation is always a simple connection, but electric has its advantages and there are more options to create a clean engine compartment. The electrical problem with these old meters is that many of the meters you find lack their own sending unit or control box.

Due to this cyclically correct appearance and its increasing popularity in the past few years, it has become easier to find the sending units and parts of these meters, and some are being copied. There are also electronics specialty stores that can repair or make these meters work, which is especially useful when using old tachometers with modern ignition systems.

The Internet is the best tool for tracking the parts or people needed to make these vintage works work.

In terms of restoration, the old American Steel Company is as hot as ever, and there are two common paths here. One is a typical repair, where the car is made to look primitive, but since car owners invest a lot of money in their engine, they want to make sure they pay close attention to it. Tachometer, oil pressure and water temperature gauge are the three major elements of these traditional restorations. Except that each of us has our own personal taste for their appearance, there is usually no extra decoration. Electric or mechanical is the only choice. Other decisions .

The other path is Restomod, which opens many options in the instrument category. The appearance and style of the instrument is the owner's choice, and many popular classic American cars and trucks have instrument bezels and customized instrument panel kits. Numbers are also a popular choice, and the final choices seem to be endless.

The common Restomod way of thinking leads to a complete set of matching modern instruments, including oil pressure, water temperature, voltmeter, fuel gauge, tachometer and speedometer.

Compared with the classic American side, the direction of the import scene is slightly different. Most of these cars are equipped with a tachometer when they leave the factory, so it is not a common additional device, but an important factor is that turbocharging has long been the driving force of imported performance. In the instrument world, supercharged instruments are the king of these cars. Both digital or analog are available, and the "pod kit" is also a common accessory for clean installation.

Oil pressure gauges are often installed, and because this market segment has a great influence on computer adjustments, air-fuel ratio gauges are also very common. Some of these air-fuel ratio meters also include built-in safety features that allow them to use pressure reference or reduce boost by identifying lean air/fuel conditions.

The pyrometer (exhaust gas temperature) gauge is also a common accessory for turbocharged engines, and last but not least is the gauge color in the imported category. Dash is designed to be clean and practical when it leaves the factory, and it is important for these car owners to maintain this approach. Many meters come with color options and are specifically designed to match factory markings and backlighting.

Those involved in motorsports rely on their appearance more seriously than those of us cruising the streets. For serious racers, there are more at stake, and always knowing what your car is doing is a key part of the equation.

The meter was not purchased for appearance or style; functionality, reliability, and accuracy top the list. Weight is a factor, and although it may not be much, every point is important. Visibility is always an important factor, and a light-colored instrument surface with bold black font is one of the more common choices.

Certain forms of motorsports, especially in off-road racing, will be transformed into rugged riding, in which case the vehicle will be subject to severe vibration and continuous shock. For these extreme cases, a liquid-filled meter will inhibit the movement of the needle.

Ultimately, almost everything a racer might need has an instrument, and which instruments they need depends on the type of car and the type of induction or power adder they are running. However, the top three that cover racing cars and almost any type of street car are tachometers, oil pressure and water temperature gauges.

Few people would doubt that the tachometer is the core and most important instrument of any type of racing car. Popular features for serious racing include large visible shift lights and memory memories.

When the oil pressure gauges are near the top of the production line, they have programmable warning lights, peak recall and output accessory control, all of which are essential for racers.

The top three are water temperature. Like oil pressure, they can include warning lights and peak recall functions.

When it comes to high-performance diesel applications, torque and horsepower are increasing, so close attention is needed. Boost pressure gauges are very popular in the list, and their main function is to monitor over or under pressure. There are always mechanical or electronic issues when deciding on gauges, but electronics is the recommendation of many truck manufacturers for booster gauges. Excessive lengths, bends, or kinks in the mechanical wires can change the reading of the booster, and powering on eliminates this possibility.

EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) meter is another common additional meter and one of the more important meters. Turbo-diesel engines can suffer severe damage due to excessive exhaust gas temperatures, and when you push these temperatures to the limit, you need to pay close attention to the readings.

Fuel pressure is critical to retrofitting a diesel engine and affects fuel efficiency, throttle response, and overall performance. For these reasons, fuel pressure gauges are another popular choice.

The transmission thermometer is almost the main component of the modified diesel truck, and it can be said to be one of the most important instruments. Transmissions are first affected by engine abuse, and overheating is the main reason for shortening or ending the life of automatic transmissions.

The transmission thermometer monitors the temperature of the fluid. Over time, if the temperature starts to show higher readings on average, it may indicate that the fluid needs to change. One of the most important functions of transmission oil is to transfer heat and cool the transmission. Old, worn fluids will decompose and reduce the efficiency of this process.

The rounding of the diesel engine list is the thermometer. Uncommon in the past, the differentials of these trucks are under more pressure than ever before. Especially when towing for long distances, paying close attention to temperature differences is the best way to know that you will not experience premature wear or differential failure.

The bottom line of the meter? If you need to pay close attention to it, no matter what style you are looking for, there is a meter to get the job done. EB
