If you want to cheer for a group of savvy people known for their tough street racers, then Team Out In Front is worth a visit when the third season of the $10,000 Drag Shootout: No Prep Edition launched by Lucas Oil Products is about to begin. Look.

When the defending champion Enemies Everywhere team was restricted by COVID travel from Australia, they could not return to defend their title. With this blank, this group of Pennsylvania unprepared brawlers named Team Out In Front received an invitation. This late notice has little time to plan their build. Then the young team had another problem. Thompson said: "Before we left, we dragged a trailer and loaded our tools, a short block, magnetic heads and gears, all of which were destroyed in the flood." "However, nothing can stop us from winning this. competition."

Team Out In Front is composed of the team’s driver, leader and "mastermind" Marcus Thompson (middle), as well as crew chief Bobby Stephenson, manufacturer Joseph Zamulinsky, and chassis manufacturer Brandon Pa En and the all-round manufacturer Donald form Robinson.

The team purchased the tools on arrival and shipped a small number of components after thorough cleaning. Their determination began to pay off because the team got the car they wanted: the 1996 Ford Mustang.

"It looks like a very clean car," Thompson described. "Immediately, Don and Brandon began to rear-end, while the rest of us had to dismantle the entire car."

The original V6 power unit dropped together with the front suspension, and the bare body was equipped with the accompanying Chris Alston Chassisworks X-type 10-point cage assembly.

After removing the front and rear suspension, both are equipped with a series of aftermarket components. BMR suspension drive collar, upper control arm, lower control arm and anti-sway rod are installed together with spherical bearings. The QA1 high-performance adjustable shock absorber, coiled spring and front control arm set up a Mustang suspension for the "strip".

The front brake is equipped with a Wildwood drag racing kit. The Steeda adapter helps to install the Wilwood aluminum compact master cylinder in the inventory firewall location. The team chose to rebuild the existing OEM rear drum brake to control the budget.

According to the 2018 movie, Mustang won the title of "White Boy Rick". "We built several budget-oriented street cars around the LS-powered Mustang," Thompson said. "When we dismantled the chassis and the inside of the cage, we wanted to restore it to its original appearance."

When the engine arrived that was not damaged by the flood, the team found a deal for a second-hand 5.3-liter LS engine and went to town to build the power unit they wanted. They used used iron blocks, crankshafts, connecting rods and engine hardware; their best result was a pair of slightly mismatched cylinder heads.

Moroso oil pan and HV oil pump were ordered to ensure proper oil filling. A set of customized Mahler pistons combined with Total Seal piston rings to complete their cylinders.

"We cooperated with COMP Cams and selected an optimal 0.624 lift, 239/243 duration camshaft (part number 54-467-11,)" Thompson said. "We save the budget for other hardware, knowing that the rest of the valve mechanism can be kept together."

The Team Out In Front valve train is equipped with new GM roller tappets and tappet guides, BTR Performance valve spring kits, and used BTR 7.400 inch long push rods. The E3 spark plug fills the head and mates with the E3 plug wire and ultra-high output LSX coil.

We drove a few cars at home with what we call whiskey, so we chose Renegade Racing Fuels' E85 fuel. We think this will be the safest setting on an engine built with last-minute parts. We can generate all the power we need through E85, turbocharging, EFI and our laptops. – Marcus Thompson

In order to fix the engine unit together, a large number of ARP fasteners are used for the head and main bolts, as well as balancer bolts, head bolts and gearbox bell bolts. Victor Reinz ordered various gaskets for cylinder heads and other parts.

Front and rear racing tires and oil bald heads were provided by Mickey Thompson. The team chose 3005s (28/10.5/15R) rear wheels and 30071 front wheels. They got a set of four Sander Engineering wheels, which was very cost-effective, which helped their budget.

Mustang is filled with Lucas Oil lubricants, such as Lucas SYN SAE 10W-40 racing oil, Sure Shift ATF oil and SYN L9 racing gear oil. The workshop was also filled with Lucas racing engine assembly grease, brake component cleaners and team contact cleaners.

Induction, power adder and fuel supply

The 80mm BorgWarner cast turbocharged engine is one of the biggest "hots" in the $7,000 gift card the team received from Summit Racing Equipment. It was decided to combine this turbocharger with Summit Racing intercooler (#SUM-260005) and a single VS Racing 60mm wastegate. The boost combination is completed by the fuel-air spark technology boost control solenoid valve kit and aluminum intake pipe from Summit Racing.

To provide E85 for the injectors, the team ordered Magnafuel 750 series fuel pumps and Aeromotive 40-75 psi regulators. The system is equipped with a wealth of Vibrant and Summit Racing braided hoses and accessories, and a used 5-gallon plastic fuel cell.

Under current COVID restrictions, second-hand parts scored very little, but the team scored second-hand Edelbrock Victor Jr. air intakes, fuel rails, and performance throttle bodies, which also helped their budget. The air intake was then equipped with Holley Performance 120 lb-hr injectors, FAST air temperature sensor and Holley Terminator X engine control unit.

The second-hand GM Powerglide found by the Out In Front team at home did participate in the construction competition. It is used in conjunction with the used 8-inch torque converter they found on the Internet. The'glide is coordinated with the engine through a PRW flexible board, and uses the new B&M Quarterstick shifter installed in the original center console to shift gears.

When the team returned to their hometown, they were proud of the budget street racing they made, details such as the appearance of the inventory. After installing the roll cage, they took the time to reinstall the factory interior correctly. This includes the newly installed Ron Francis wiring system and the original stereo.

The 8.8 rear end of the GT model was found locally, and it was filled with Moser Engineering 35 spline shafts, spools, housing ends, etc. The team chose a Spicer ring gear and pinion with a ratio of 3.55 and a U-shaped joint to complete the assembly.

Impact Racing Products equips the team with safe racing cars. Marcus Thompson chose Impact Vapor SNELL15 helmet, G6 SFI 3.35 gloves, 5 layers, Nomex SFI 3.2A/20 pants and jacket. Summit Racing engine diapers, drive blankets and roll cage pads complete the safe shopping.

The original 8.8 Mustang differential was completed with Moser and Spicer components and installed on the traction belt. The rear suspension retains its factory geometry, including BMR control arms and anti-roll bars. QA1 is equipped with adjustable shock absorbers for all four corners of the car. A Stroud chute was cleanly manufactured through the bumper.

Before the failure of the tuner with the team, the Mustang suffered severe torque converter damage while testing and spinning the turbine. This damage repair caused precious time to be lost from the window of the chassis dynamometer.

Between lengthy repairs, some wastegate rewiring, and conservative adjustments started in the engine control software, the team squeezed three times in the allotted time. They took away the data printout, showing that the power between all three sessions was just over 500 horsepower.

The cooling system of "White Boy Rick" is an aluminum 29×19.25 inch aluminum racing radiator and high-performance water pump from PRW Industries. Kooks headers provide turbine headers and a large number of exhaust pipes. All this applies to BorgWarner's 80mm cast turbocharger.

"I'm not sure what happened," Thompson shared. "We started with baby tunes and added more and more impetus from there. It does seem to generate more power, but the dynamometer keeps reading the same information. We are ready to participate in the competition, but I am not satisfied with the ergometer results."

Despite time constraints, flooding and damaged parts, Team Out In Front will not spoil their game. "We are the youngest overall team to participate in the show," Thompson said proudly. "We are determined to use the same team we have in our hometown to work together and stand out."
