Hay fever season is coming-this is what you need to know

The spring flowers may be in full bloom, but the hay fever season is in full swing, and it is expected that pollen counts throughout the UK will be high-causing many people to sneeze, runny noses and other troublesome symptoms.

Pollen forecaster Dr. Beverly Adams-Grum said: “Tree pollen developed in the flowers the previous summer. Last summer, our temperature was high enough to produce a lot of pollen for this year.” “Therefore, from late February to Both the alder pollen season and the birch pollen season in mid-March have been very intense so far."

As more hay fever symptoms appear, look at the two most common types of pollen in the UK and the most severely affected areas...

Pollen comes from feather-like flowers that grow on tall and long grass. If you mow your lawn regularly, you are less likely to release pollen.

"Grass pollen season is the most important season, affecting approximately 95% of people with hay fever," Beverly added. "At present, we are unable to determine the severity, but there are signs that the average incidence and total catch of pollen have caused symptoms in the southern and central regions since mid-May."

Although all parts of the UK are affected by grass pollen, the most severely affected areas are the West Midlands, Northwest England, and South Central England. Scotland is the mildest region, but there are still an average of 11 hot days in each season.

Over the years, due to climate change, the content of birch pollen has risen sharply. Although the birch pollen season lasts throughout May, approximately 25% of the UK will be affected by this airborne allergy.

"The incidence in the southern and central regions of the country occurred in the southern and central regions in the last few days of March this year, and spread to other areas in the first few weeks of April," Beverley added.

"In most parts of England and Wales, birch pollen can be very troublesome, but in the southeast of England, especially in the wooded areas of Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex, the situation may be worse. The seasons in Scotland and Northern Ireland are much milder."

Struggling to cope during the pollen season? Check out the simple things you can do below to end your pain...

If you go to coastal areas, if the sea breeze is strong, the pollen content of beaches and coastal areas will be much lower, so if you need to alleviate these symptoms, please try to escape to the sea.

Beverly added: “Children who are not affected too much and who are responding to the medication may still be able to enjoy outdoor areas where there are no allergic trees/weeds and the grass is well trimmed.”

Try antihistamines. If you find that your illness is still severe, antihistamines can help stop allergies — and make those summer months easier to bear. Depending on the severity of hay fever, they can help relieve symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and congestion. If you are not sure which to choose, please consult your local GP first.

Create a pollen-free home "If possible, have a room in the home that can be used as a pollen-free sanctuary," Beverley said. "This means keeping doors and windows closed, maybe running an air purifier, vacuuming and removing dust regularly, don't enter the room with outside clothes, and don't let pets in, because pollen may accumulate on their fur."
