On Sunday, when the Susquehanna Hose Company received a call to rescue a man from a flooded car in Tydings Park in Havre de Grace, a training exercise aimed at producing volunteer recruitment videos took a major turn.

The fire rescue boat and diving team of the Susquehanna Hose Company were conducting rescue exercises in the water of Tiddings Park when a car drove out of the dock parking lot and trapped the driver.

Lieutenant Alex Jackson smashed the driver's window, and Captain Mary Walsh-already wearing suitable rescue clothing-rescued the driver from his car before it was submerged.

"If the car starts in a few seconds, they will crash into the boat," Scott Hurst, the head of the Susquehanna Hose Company, told The Aegis.

Hurst also thanked the First Arriving crew for their role in the production of the video.

He said that this video can now also educate people how quickly things will escalate when a car goes underwater.

"If we are not there, it might be an unfortunate different result," Hirst said.

The driver was taken by Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Trauma Center. Hirst said Monday morning that the driver is in a stable condition.
