It is important to verify the size of the oil filter adapter. This video is sponsored by Fram.
Some car manufacturers seem to be unable to decide whether to use standard or metric threads on their oil filter mounting adapters. What happens if you make a wrong choice? Let us say that this will be a bad day in the bay.
Certain manufacturers-I am looking at you, Chrysler and Mitsubishi-have listed oil filter applications that use metric 20 mm or standard 3/4-16 threaded filter mounting adapters.
Before selecting and installing the replacement oil filter, it is important to confirm the size of the oil filter adapter. Using a metric thread filter on a standard threaded mounting adapter will cause oil loss and may damage the engine.
What is the difference between 20 mm and ¾ inch connectors? About this much-but it is enough.
To ensure that you choose the correct replacement filter, first determine what kind of filter is installed on the vehicle. If you are not sure, here is a simple way to check. Use a high-quality and most importantly accurate ¾-inch open-end wrench and follow the simple steps below.
First, drain the oil and remove the existing filter.
Next, try to slide the open end of the ¾ inch wrench through the adapter threads. If the wrench fits the thread, the vehicle is equipped with a standard 3/4-16 filter adapter.
If the wrench does not fit the thread, your vehicle is equipped with a metric 20 mm filter adapter.
Simple, easy, and effective-knowing the correct size is up to you. Once you have determined which it is, writing the dimensions on the filter housing with a permanent marker will make the entire process of the next oil change easier.
